Do you have a favorite next to your monitor while you program?
Every developer has at least one reference book handy standing up next to their monitor or within hands reach.
As you can see, the books above I have are as follows:

Interesting story and very enjoyable.
I enjoy the benefits of being a contractor as opposed to an employee. There are obvious reasons and then there are the personal reasons.
If you are a contractor, you are brought in to work on an assignment to the best of your ability and get the job done within the alloted time and budget with your technology knowledge.

Fireday - Firefox extension reviews for January 26, 2007

This week: LeakMonitor, Tippy, and Tags Everywhere.
LeakMonitor
Rating: 4/5
The LeakMonitor extension is great for developers who have one particular leak with JavaScript objects in their chrome or web page. The leak is when you close a window and the JavaScript objects are still held by native code in Firefox.
I installed the extension last Friday and have been using it for the week. I usually don't open additional windows for the LeakMonitor to do it's job. Those days are gone. I strictly use tabs. With my custom CMS I built, when I open a window, I get the LeakMonitor dialog box telling me that there are a couple of JavaScript leaks.

A great introduction to what's coming in C# 3.0 from Granville Barnett.
Last year, about this time, I remember hearing that Microsoft was moving towards a new revision of C# 3.0 and the recent news about the .NET 3.0 Framework.
I asked a while back if anyone had news about what was new in 3.0 Framework or C# information. The timing is perfect. Mr. Barnett wrote a C# 3.0 introduction as to what we can expect.

Web Design contracts are a very important part of your career as a freelance web designer. It protects you...and your client.
A company emails you and says, "Based on the proposal you created, we want to move forward with the site. Could you please write up a contract for us?" Now what?
Contracts are not only for the client's protection, but for yours as well. According to Wikipedia, the definition of a contract is as follows:

I pose the question to the audience.
For most of the design community, Adobe's Photoshop has always been there for you. You create your layered graphics and export it to your site and everything is well and good.
But now, there is a new face on the scene.

Really informative error message, isn't it?
Tag Cloud Mania

Want to see a tag cloud of Web 2.0? How about Bill Gates CES speech? Or the Presidential Address?
I'm currently rebuilding DCS Media and I'm thinking about adding a tag cloud to the site. A tag cloud adds a certain "what's popular at-a-glance" view to your audience and a "what is the audience looking at?" to the authors of the site.
Tag clouds aren't specific to a particular industry by any means and provides a great way to see what's important based on the content.

This week: FareFirst, Operator, and Percula.
FareFirst, The Airfare Extension
Rating: 5/5
In February, I'll be taking a little bit of a needed rest (Haven't taken a vacation in five years). I've been looking around for some deals on airfare. So I thought why not find a Firefox extension that can help me out with my travel arrangements.
I heard about FareCompare and researched their site. I love the way they organized their web site. It provides a lot of options, but didn't say anything about an extension for IE or Firefox. So I went back to Mozilla, searched, and found FareFirst.

Instead of reinventing the wheel, someone had to make a tutorial on this somewhere.

So you think you want to be a manager?

Boxes and Arrows writer Erin Malone discusses her transition from designer to manager.
You have stars in your eyes, right? You want the title, you want the prestige, oh..and you probably want the money? Making a transition from a worker to a manager is difficult and, trust me, it may not be greener on the other side.
Erin Malone was promoted from a designer to a manager and now that she's a manager, she's made some interesting realizations. Her article, "So you think you want to be a manager?", is right on target and recommend reading it before taking that managerial position.
