FreeNAS: The Free NAS Server
An even better option for setting up a NAS for your SOHO (Small Office/Home Office).
Last month, I was talking about setting up a NAS (Network Attached Storage) in the home with two posts: DIY NAS Smackdown and How to build a cheap and fast RAID 5 NAS. You can accumulate a lot of images from your photography, recorded programs with your DVR/Tivo, and device drivers and registered programs. It all adds up.
This post completes the circle.
FreeNAS.org offers the software for free to create your very own NAS server. If you have an old PC sitting around with a couple of hard drives, there is no reason why you shouldn't be able to create your own terabyte storage facility.
I just need to grab a USB hub and start purchasing some external USB hard drive enclosures and start attaching them to the PC running FreeNAS.
If anyone else is running FreeNAS, let me know what problems or successes you've had installing and/or operating it.

Bob BakhAugust 18th, 2008 at 1:50pmI have freenas, and have a MAC mini in a closet connected to an NFS share where I copy data to from the TiVo, and store videos and share it with my TiVo from the Mini who is connected to FreeNas, so I have about 1 TB of shows available on my Tivo Network served from my freenas NFS share.

David CrocombeMarch 28th, 2009 at 10:11pmI have just setup Free Nas on an old Dell PC. However, when I attach a USB drive to the Dell, it is not seen by FreeNas. I am looking under drives. Am I doing something wrong, or am I missing something?

Sean MelchiondaApril 12th, 2009 at 6:55pmI'd like to know more about how Bob Bakh is getting his Tivo to see his FreeNas box. I'm trying to accomplish the same thing but with PCs. I'm wondering what software he is running on the Mac that permits the Tivo to see the FreeNas.
