Fireday - Firefox extensions for October 6, 2006
This week: CLEO and Stealther
CLEO (Compact Library Extension Organizer)
Rating: 5/5
Extension developers always have problems uninstalling their extensions while testing their own extention. Then FEBE came along and saved the day.
Now, CLEO takes it one step further than FEBE and creates an XPI package from all of your extensions so you don't need to worry about losing your extensions. Naturally, FEBE has to be installed for this extension to work.
To access the extension, go under Tools/FEBE/CLEO and create a package. The extension will "zip" up all of your extension and provide a finished XPI.
The installation was easy and the extension builds on what extension developers really need: an easy way to double click and restore all of your extensions with no hassles. The extension builds on what FEBE has successfully done and takes the extension from a backup utility to a developers utility.
Nicely done!
Stealther
Rating: 3/5
(Click on Web Design)
Stealther is an extension that leaves no trace of where you were or what you were doing. Stealther disables the following items:
- History
- Downloads
- Cookies
- Disk Cache
- Saved Form Information
- Referrer Header
I guess you could say this takes paranoia to a whole new level.
The one drawback was the installation. You need to download the xpi and install it manually as opposed to Firefox detecting and installing the extension automatically. Most users will have a problem with this.
Since experienced Firefox users already know about how to enable (or disable) these types of settings(coughcoughabout:configcough), Stealther is primarily for users who are new to Firefox and need a quick way to cover their tracks.
