Information Week had an article on "The Trouble with Firefox." Users are reporting high memory usage. Here is how to fix them.
If you read the article, there is a side bar for a cure labeled "One Way to Curb Memory Spikes".
Personally, I have been using Firefox since inception and it ROCKS! One of the extensions that I love is the Web Developer extension which I posted earlier last week. Check it out!
