Here are five technologies that transferred from the movies to reality.

DCS Media focuses primarily on growing small businesses using hard learned lessons, snappy technology, and Internet trends to further your business, but every once in a while, there are technologies that reach into our dreams and make those technologies a reality.

Even James Bond doesn't have it this good.

  1. MechWarriors/RoboTech - (Reference: RoboTech) - For those who have played the game RoboTech or MechWarrior, you know what a "Mech" is, but for the rest of those who don't have time, it's still impressive to see a full-fledged Mech Warrior-type robot. Sakakibara Kikai (Japanese : Babelfish translation), a company in Japan, built what they call a LandWalker, similar to a type of mecha in the game. The video demonstration is here  It's just a matter of time before we have full-scale robots ready for military use.
  2. Virtual screens - (Reference: Minority Report) - When watching Minority Report, every geek was drooling over the monitor that Tom Cruise was using to view the "paperless" data on the screen. Now, Perceptive Pixel has created that same behavior as it was in the movie (blog post). The only difference is that it's not on a hologram, but against a wall. Last year, I talked about a similar technology called Atlas (No, not Microsoft) and I discussed it briefly last year here.

  3. Convert Garbage into Energy - (Reference: Back to the Future) - Everyone loved Back to the Future with the super-powered Delorean, but one idea that interested me the most was at the end of the first movie, Doc came back from the future and threw garbage into the Delorean to convert it into energy. Again, the time has come and it has arrived (http://www.popsci.com/popsci/science/873aae7bf86c0110vgnvcm1000004eecbccdrcrd.html). Given enough time to shrink the process down, it may come to fruition in the next 5-10 years.

  4. Invisibility Cloaks - (Reference: Harry Potter/Predator/Star Trek) - When Harry receives his cloak for Christmas, he puts it on and disappears. Bending light to trick the eye like in Harry Potter, Predator, or even Star Trek is quite a feat to accomplish in real life. Even though it's a movie trick, there really isn't an invisibility cloak. Or is there? Maybe it should be called a camouflage cloak.

  5. Tricorders - (Reference: Star Trek) - Since we're on the subject of Star Trek, how about a Tricorder from the older shows? Purdue has developed a device similar to a tricorder, but not as complicated as the one on Star Trek, but they're working on it.
