Google has released a newest upgrade to their online RSS Reader.

Whoa!

Last night, I was reading my feeds in Google Reader and around 7:00-ish, Bam! New screen. I looked up at the URL to see if I was on the right site. Yep, Google Reader.

After taking it all in, I realized that Google upgraded their online RSS Reader to look more explorer-like where you have your categories on the left and the feed list on the right. Looks sharp!

The feed list on the right has two views: expanded and list view. The expanded view shows all of your feeds expanded where the list view displays the feeds compressed with a title and small abstract (my preference).

For those Google Reader users, they kept the keyboard shortcuts the same, but now, I'm starting to look over my feeds that interest me and click on them. Let me explain this a little.

One awesome feature they added, which I love, is the ability mark a specific category as read. This was a feature this reader desperately needed. When you look through your list of feeds and read the ones that interest you, click "Mark all as read." Bam! Done! Next category. :-) This allows better (and faster) feed management.

Overall, I love the new layout and it provides a better streamlined approach to how you manage RSS feeds on the Internet. The new Google Reader has moved towards a GMail-like functionality, which I imagine is what they were going for.

There are more features listed on their Google Reader Blog, but Google better watch it. I may need to leave my FeedDemon for them.
