If anyone is involved with open source projects, this news should be an excellent motivator for developers.
Wow! This was a hit to wake up to.
Sun is acquiring mySQL for $1 billion <Dr. Evil pinky in mouth> dollars.
Sun announced it this morning and I also read this from Mr. O'Reilly's blog and since Mr. O'Reilly is on the MySQL Board of Directors, you can't get this any more closer to the integrity of the news.
This also should excite a lot of open source developers. How often would you build something and then have it purchased by a major company for an exorbitant amount of money? This is every developers dream.
BUT there are two caveats: 1). you have to have a product that is worth gold and is used almost daily for an acquisition to happen, and 2). an acquisition won't happen overnight. It will take time for your product to ascend to a certain level of stability before it's even looked at by a major company.
If you can achieve these two feats, you may be on the road to success with your open source project.
