Why is the Google Pack only for Windows XP? I already have all of the existing software on my machine.
Ok, Google has been rolling out new sections almost every month including Google Reader, Google Earth, Picasa and recently Google Video. Google has released a ton of applications lately.
But this Google Pack? This is one strange release. If you examine all of the applications in the "G-Pack," all of them are considered standard apps. Why are the system requirements just for Windows XP?
According to TheCounter.com December 2005 stats, there is still 9% of us left out there. I figured it would also be for Windows 2000. Now I have Windows 2000 and wonder about the configuration of these applications.
Here are the applications that you get in the "G-Pack" for FREE:
- Google Earth - Their 3D Earth Browser (installed)
- Picasa - Photo Organizer (installed)
- Google Pack ScreenSaver - New App, but it's not hard to write a screen saver.
- Mozilla FireFox with Google toolbar - web browser (installed)
- Norton Anti-virus 2005 Special Edition - Not installed, but i'm sure people have it installed on Windows 2K.
- Google Desktop - Desktop companion (installed)
- Google Toolbar for IE - Personally, if you have Firefox on your machine, why have IE? :-) (NOT installed)
- Ad-Aware SE Personal - Anti-Spyware utility (NOT installed)
- Adobe Reader 7 - PDF Document Viewer (installed)
Over half of these applications are installed on my machine. Did Google do something to Firefox to make it only run on XP? Nah, they wouldn't do that. Are they in ca-hoots with Microsoft to push for everyone to jump to Windows XP? Nah. So what is the reason for these strange OS requirements?
