AJAX/Web 2.0 Weekly "Collective"

A roundup of what has happened this week with AJAX/Web 2.0.

Wow! What a week for Web 2.0. Everywhere you turn: AJAX, AJAX...and yes, even some more AJAX. I've been a little bit behind, but I'm using this post to catch up.

Max Keisler has an article about the various ways that AJAX is used to show off photos in galleries, slideshows and effects. According to the article, he's been "...searching and collecting links for downloadable image galleries and slideshows." Impressive collection of links.

Time to throw an AJAX application into the mix. Pixoh.com has a DHTML interface that allows you to edit images online. You can crop, resize, or rotate the images. Very cool AJAX app.

Well, Dvorak from PCMag.com talks about the Web 2.0 Baloney and describes "how little has changed" between 1.0 and 2.0. He compares the new web to "an old wine in new bottles." I agree with him to an extent. The old web HAD the same functionality until someone dug a little deeper and found additional functionality. That single functionality has become the hinge pin for blurring the lines between a desktop and web application.

Next, Adobe released the FABridge for Flex applications. This small piece of code can be "inserted into a Flex application, a Flex component, or even an empty SWF file and exposes it to scripting in the browser. Once you insert the library, you can access all of the functionality of ActionScript just like you were using JavaScript.

EBA Labs created a desktop AJAX spreadsheet engine. The engine allows you to perfom cell calculations, in-place editing and styling of individual cells. Could it eventually replace Excel? No, but it's a start. :-)

Lastly, Laszlo announced at the O'Reilly Emerging Technology Conference that they are planning to extend their OpenLaszlo AJAX application development platform with the ability to deliver full applications through browsers with or without a Flash plug-in.
